Week 1, Introduction

Hi everyone! My name is Mary. I was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This is my senior year at OU, but I'll graduate in May 2016 because I changed my major a few times. I finally decided on studying accounting and biology. So officially I am a Duel Accounting and Biology student, which means that when I graduate, I will receive both a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science. With these degrees I plan on going to graduate school for Health Administration. I enjoy my course work from semester to semester because the business courses are evened out by my awesome biology courses. My favorite class I have taken thus far is Medical Entomology with Dr. Heather Ketchum.

Here's a picture of a secondary screwworm, Cochliomyia macellaria, I took while looking at it under a dissecting microscope last semester. Look at that sponging mouthpart!!

This semester I am starting Big Brothers Big Sisters and I will be a Big Sister. I'm pretty excited about it. Speaking of siblings, I have two older brothers. Richie, who is six years older than me, went to Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY and is now the Master Brewer at Bacchus Brewery. My other brother, Andy, is four years older than me and went to Suffolk University in Boston, MA. He works in California for a start-up company. My dad has been a medical malpractice attorney for over 30 years and my mom just started a realtor staging business.

I took Italian 2 and Veterinary Entomology over the summer at OU. Veterinary entomology is the study of arthropods in veterinary medicine, so we learned about the transmission of vector borne disease and various arthropods who positively or negatively affect the quality of life of livestock, domestic animals, etc. Toward the end of the summer I cut off 11 inches of hair and donated it to locks of love. I also worked for my dads office, going to the courthouse, filing in the office, answering phones.. Anything I could do to help.

Looking forward to a great semester!

  1. Hello Mary! My name is Anthony. I was mostly raised in Oklahoma as well. Just wondering, what high school did you go to in Tulsa? I have a lot of friends that live in Tulsa. Anyways I think Biology is amazing! What other kind of animals have you dissected before? Lastly, is it difficult to keep up with 2 majors? It seems to hard to me to double major, yet I know a handful of people that do it.

  2. I can't imagine doing more than one major, kudos to you. That definitely sounds like it would be a great career though! I think it is awesome that your brother is the Master Brewer at Bacchus. They make some of my favorite beers. My ancestors were Italian so I've always wanted to learn Italian and visit Italy, but I thought learning Spanish would help me more. Kind of jealous!

  3. Medical Entomology: that sounds like an amazing class... a little scary - scary for me anyway, because some insects freak me out, especially when seen up close... and I've never looked at insects through a microscope like that! But it sounds really fascinating too! And Veterinary Entomology also - I can see how that would be a really important topic for the well-being of both animals and humans! Are you interested in learning something about the Indian medical tradition in this class? That could be something really interesting! Someone did a great project on yoga last semester, but nobody has done a project on Ayurveda ... and, of course, there is the amazing story of Hanuman and the Medicine Hill. It's my favorite Hanuman story!

  4. Hey Mary, I'm Catherine!! It is nice to meet you. I am so glad you found a major (or two) that you enjoy and are excited about. I have great respect for Entomology, and it is exciting to hear that is your favorite class. I don't know much about bugs, but I am sure there is a lot to be learned by studying them.

Both Locks of Love and Big Brother Big Sister are incredible organizations to get involved in. I am excited for you as you get to mentor to a student.

As a side note I really love the layout of your blog! It looks fabulous!!

  5. Hey Mary, hope your labor day weekend went well! I too am an Okie, I was raised in Edmond but my grandparents had a farm right outside of Tulsa in Bixby were I would spend majority of my summers. I'm not sure if you've ever been there for the annual green corn festival but it fantastic. It's quite the experience to witness frog racing and turtle racing haha. I found your dual major to rather interesting. Sounds like it keeps you pretty busy. Well best of luck on your studies and I hope to read more of your stories!

  6. That's so awesome that you're going to be doing big brothers big sisters this semester!! I have always wanted to do that but just have never had enough time! That's so amazing that you donated your hair!! I respect you so much for that and I bet you look so so great!!

  7. Hi Mary! I too am from Tulsa. That is an interesting major combination, I could see how it might take five years to do even if you had not changed your major a few times. I think it's cool you enjoy the science classes more than the business. I started a minor in business, but I didn't enjoy economics as much as chemistry.

  8. Hi Mary, I give you a lot of respect for double majoring in both accounting and biology. Im sure it is very difficult but it sounds like you are handling it well. An occupation in Health Administration sounds very interesting. It sounds like you find bugs really interesting. Sounds like all your classes and organizations keep you quite busy! Best of luck!

  9. Hello Mary, it's nice to meet you! That has to be really hard double majoring in two completely different fields, but it sounds like you really enjoy what you do. I think it is really interesting that you already know specifically what you want to do. Sounds like your family is spread out across the country now. That must make Christmas and Thanksgiving breaks a lot of fun when they all come home! Can't wait to read more of your blog throughout the class.

  10. Wow, Mary. I think I learned more from your intro than I did in my college science classes combined (but I took really easy ones cause I suck at science)! I'm glad you've found something you're so passionate about! My passion has always been with writing, so I knew exactly what I wanted to do when I came to college. Although, I'm still graduating a semester late because things happen! I totally cut off all my hair this summer for locks of love too!

  11. Hi Mary! It's nice to get to know you. It is great that you have found something you can be so passionate about! I would never be able to be passionate about insects, as some of them terrify me, but I am glad you found something to enjoy. You sound like you have a very busy few semesters ahead of you in order to graduate. I wish you lots of luck!

  12. Oh wow Mary I am thoroughly impressed by you based on your intro! I started out at OU majoring in business and I thought those freshman classes were tough, boy I can't imagine how the upper-division courses are, AND the Biology classes must keep you so busy. I am pleased to see how excited you are about your chosen majors though and I think it is awesome you are able to round out school with volunteering/donating as well! This says a lot about your character and I can tell you are going to go places in life!

  13. Wow Mary you seem to have it all figured out and I am so happy for you! Dual major is hard and you seem to have it all done right and ready to handle the future! I love how positive and delighted you are about everything you do! I admire you interest for science, I think it's a great field for opportunity you could literally go into any sort of field in science. What a great introduction about yourself. I hope to get to read more about you and your stories. Good luck!

  14. Hiya Mary,
I feel like you're one of the last people I haven't commented on, so here it goes. That's an excellent blend of majors, and I have a good feeling that you'll like Health Administration. I used to work at my mother's office, too. I usually just delivered and filed paperwork at the courthouses of Oklahoma and Cleveland County. I kind of miss that job since I got to spend all day in downtown OKC. Your Veterinary Entomology class sounds awesome. I'm in pathogenic microbiology but we only briefly discuss some insect vectors.
